When it comes to European trucks, whether you’re operating a Iveco Stralis, Volvo FH, Scania R-series, MAN TGX, or a Mercedes Actros, you’re driving some of the most advanced machines on the road. But even top-tier engineering comes with its own set of quirks and wear points.
At our truck service centre, we work on European heavy trucks every day. And over time, we’ve noticed patterns in what breaks, why it breaks, and how you can prevent it.
These are our our top 7 European truck repairs we see most often, and what you can do to keep your truck running strong.
1. DPF & AdBlue System Failures
What goes wrong:
Blocked Diesel Particulate Filters (DPF), faulty AdBlue injectors, or SCR sensor issues. These systems are critical for emissions compliance, but sensitive.
Why it happens:
- Too much idling
- Short trips without full regen
- Cheap AdBlue or contaminated fluid
How to avoid it:
- Minimise unnecessary idling
- Take the truck on long, hot runs to complete regenerations
- Use high-quality AdBlue and keep the tank sealed
2. Premature Clutch Wear
What goes wrong:
Clutch slips, juddering, or complete failure, common on high-GCM trucks or inner-city work.
Why it happens:
- Overloaded trailers
- Poor shifting habits
- Delayed clutch replacement after early warning signs
How to avoid it:
- Drive with proper RPM management
- Avoid slipping the clutch under load
- Pay attention to pedal feel, noise, or smell
3. Turbocharger Failures
What goes wrong:
Loss of power, whistling noises, black smoke, usually due to turbo damage or actuator failure.
Why it happens:
- Lack of oil pressure
- Blocked filters
- Overboosting due to tuning or sensor faults
How to avoid it:
- Stick to service intervals for oil + air filters
- Use quality oil matched to OEM spe
- Let the engine idle for 1–2 minutes after heavy work before shut-off
4. Electrical Faults & Warning Lights
What goes wrong:
Dashboards lighting up like Christmas trees. From faulty sensors to ECU communication failures, electrical gremlins can be tricky.
Why it happens:
- Water ingress in connectors
- Damaged wiring looms
- Weak batteries or alternators
How to avoid it:
- Regular diagnostic scans
Protect battery terminals & clean grounds
Act on warning lights early — don’t ignore them
5. ZF or Automated Manual Gearbox Issues
What goes wrong:
Rough shifting, failure to engage gears, stuck in neutral.
Why it happens:
- Worn clutch actuators
- Gearbox oil not changed
- TCU software faults
How to avoid it:
- Follow correct gear oil change intervals
- Get shifting issues checked immediately
- Keep software updated where applicable
6. Air Suspension Problems
What goes wrong:
Truck leaning to one side, rough ride, slow to rise/drop.
Why it happens:
- Leaking air bags
- Faulty height sensors
- Compressor failure
How to avoid it:
- Visual checks for bag cracks and leaks
- Keep water traps drained
7. Cooling System Leaks & Overheating
What goes wrong:
Coolant loss, overheating on hills, cracked tanks or hoses.
Why it happens:
- Age-related wear
- Poor quality coolant
- Pressure surges from failed thermostats
How to avoid it:
- Use high spec coolant only
- Pressure test cooling system annually
- Replace hoses and clamps preventively if ageing
Prevention is key
Most of these issues start small. They only become expensive when they’re ignored. The best repair is the one you never need.
That’s why we recommend regular, professional inspections, especially for high-km or fleet trucks.
